The Shoreman Scores

A picture is worth a thousand words. Red Lake without ice.

Took a chance and drove up to Red Lake this morning. I won't be able to get out fishing for a couple of weeks, so it was today or two weeks from now. I got up there about 9:00am and set out a slip sinker rig with Berkley Gulp Trout Dough in Rainbow Candy. Set up my 7' Ugly Stik with silver Panther Martin and away I went. Well, seems the trout liked Power Bait this morning.

The little guy on the bottom liked the Rainbow Candy. The other two liked the old stand by Orange Pulp flavor. The one on top is 13", middle 14" and bottom is 11". Guess who's having trout for dinner tonight? OK, enough bragging. I threw out a bunch of lures and they didn't produce anything. Even Kastmasters in gold & silver, which usually work in this lake, bombed. But as you can see, the day was not wasted. Note the forked tail on the one on top. It's not cut, it looks like it grew that way. Odd.

Couple of scenery shots, left and right of where I was fishing. That's it for today. Till next time, "Yeh, Red Lake is ice free".

  1. Good job Shoreman. I am heading out Sunday AM (finally). Haven't decided yet, but was thinking maybe Middle Bar or Electra or one of the lakes up 88. I really want to toss some lures on my Ultra Lite. Maybe not as far as Red Lake. What do you think?

  4. I've heard that Middle Bar has some really good fishing. I've been tempted to go there on several occasions, but every time I drive past, I'm on my way somewhere else. Red Lake should be good all year and is a bit of a drive for you(about 60 miles). I'd vote for Middle Fork or Electra Rd. for a quick fishing trip. Bear River is also good right next to the dam. Let me know how you do. Those are Brookies, by the way.

  5. Wow! Those are some great pictures. I think you are on to something. Keep that camera with you and post more shots for us. Have you ever put your camera in a zip lock bag and taken some underwater shots? I've found it works very well. But you obviously have an eye for photography, so I'm probably the one that should be asking for tips. Thanks and I look forward to seeing more.

  6. Hi JB. Welcome to my blog. Glad you like the pictures. I have a habit of just pointing the camera and snapping a picture that turns out good. I have a very special picture on my desk of Hull Bay in St Thomas I took some years ago that turned out that way. As for underwater, most of the lakes I fish are not ones an underwater shot would turn out any good. I always carry my camera and will keep the pics coming.

  7. Way to go, Shoreman! Those trout are beginning to come around to your persistence. Keep it up. Beautiful pictures! I just love fishing mountain lakes. They make the fishing special.

  8. Oh yummy. Not a fan of dill, but a huge fan of trout. Now I want some.

  9. No luck Sunday. Middle Bar looks to be best served using a boat, so next time I bring my inflatable and trolling motor. We had to fish from the bridge and there were none biting there. They were jumping several hundred yards away though. We tried Electra by the power house as well. I got one bite but none hooked. A guy down the way a bit got one but too small to keep. But now I know what to expect.
